2021 Wyoming All-State Band Excerpts

Wyoming flute friends, what follows are the uncut, unedited (and unreverbed!) performances of this year's All-State etudes for flute. My All-State virtual practice session, sponsored by Wyoming Flute Association, has already come and gone (thanks for those of you who joined me!), but there's still time to register for the All-State virtual master class, which takes place October 31 at 11am MDT. Take the plunge here.

ETUDE I – Con Brio

Musical Goals for Etude I:

• Strive for outstanding rhythmic clarity with consistent tempo.

• Play with clearly expressed articulations. Commit to making a clear difference between marcato moments with accents and legato moments with slurs.

• Be sure to show the dynamic contrast at measure 9. However, don’t let the change in volume create a loss of rhythmic energy and drive.

ETUDE II – Expressivo con moto

Musical Goals for Etude II:

• Play with maximum expression, even with internal parts. Emphasize LINE SHAPING (the general idea that ascending musical lines demand more energy while descending lines back off.)

• As with Etude I, play with maximum dynamic range.

• The “high point” of Etude II is measure 14, beat 2. Make that clear in your performance.

• Bring your most beautiful, “warmest” tone to Etude II.

To make practicing Etude II more enjoyable and productive, I created an optional piano accompaniment MP3. Here is a download link:

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!
